There now stands a new retail development in Bangkok that not only attests but further solidifies its reputation as a travel hub in Asia. Situated in the expat Sukhumvit area, Terminal 21 is a concept retail center that has an interesting proposition to differentiate itself against the many shopping malls that already dot the cityscape. Terminal 21 is not just another shopping mall – inside, one can find zones dedicated to various far-off destinations that include the likes of the Caribbean, San Francisco, Tokyo, London and Istanbul.
another floor, another city!
Many of the stores are actually quite similar to other malls in the city but there is a section dedicated to local Thai manufacturers. Interiors-wise it is hard to beat. Each floor has its own theme. For instance, the San Francisco zone includes a replica of a lighthouse and Fisherman’s Wharf. And of course, it won’t be San Francisco without Swensen’s, which has an outlet in the mall. The Tokyo floor has 2 large statues of sumo wrestlers while the upper floors play host to a gigantic Oscar award.
Although the mall is the first thing that one will notice after alighting at Asok BTS station (just a few minutes walk away!), Terminal 21 is actually a mixed development. There is an extremely popular hotel located right next door called Grande Centre Point Hotel Sukhumvit Terminal 21. Recently, I had the opportunity to be invited for an inspection, to see what the buzz was all about. And I can say that it doesn’t disappoint!
The rooms are generally spacious, ranging from 32 sq meters at the minimum to 46 sq meters for a hotel room. Apartment-type one bedroom units of up to 70 sq meters in size are also available for those in need of extra space. The hotel generally follows a contemporary / minimalist / futuristic theme and this shows in the room. I will let the pictures do the talking.
The hotel has just turned one but it did not take long to receive extensive buzz. The property regularly gets booked out a month in advance and I would have stayed here myself in my recent Bangkok trip except that there were no rooms available. It’s quite obvious to see why. The rooms are choc-full of amenities including a kitchenette, cutlery and even a microwave oven! It’s a fully functioning hotel “unit” that caters to both tourists and long-stayers.
If I had a gym like this, I would probably have no qualms to go everyday. Actually, I mistook the oval-shaped room for a lounge at first. The equipments are all new and state-of-the-art.
Versace lamps! I have not seen this anywhere else
a movie room for film buffs
indoor jacuzzi to melt the stress away
This is the outdoor pool. The weather was not so great that day but the end is actually an infinity pool with spectacular views of the city skyline.
Guests are also entitled to have high tea in the hotel’s executive lounge. It features an array of snack items including those well-decorated cupcakes up there as well as French-style macaroons.
Given its hard-to beat location, excellent connectivity with modes of public transport, luxurious facilities and postmodern ambience, the Grande Centre Point Sukhumvit Terminal 21 is truly a choice accommodation in Bangkok!

That’s a nice mall to hang-out in. I like the Pier 21 food court. And the free internet sweetens the deal.
Terminal21 to me is a mall trying to be different but failed miserably–talking about “identity crisis”
