Tucked away in the relatively new and upscale Scotts Square, just off Orchard Road, is an exciting, recently-opened dining option called Delicious. It offers a smorgasbord of dishes, taking its customers away on a culinary exploration of mainly Southeast Asian inspired dishes. Recently, I was fortunate to be invited to sample their offerings.
And it was a treat! The occasion was graced by Steve Allen, the very friendly Creative Chef who flew from Kuala Lumpur to join us as well as the bubbly Jasmina, from Eastern and Oriental Group (Delicious’ parent company). The culinary expedition began shortly thereafter, with Delicious’ signature Watermelon and Lychee Blast (my personal favorite!) as my drink, as well as the myriad of Southeast Asian dishes that lay before us.
Truth be told, there is no one specific cuisine that can accurately describe the offerings at Delicious. Its menu is evenly split between local dishes as well international favorites such as hamburgers, sandwiches, steaks and the like. For the occasion of our food tasting, majority of the dishes presented were Malay favorites.
the salad sampler
First came the salads. Delicious has a good range of salads, with both the Asian and Western sort. We got to try both. Their Thai Beef Salad was quite special. Beef was tender (it’s Angus Beef!) and came with just the right amount of dressing for that undeniable Thai flavor. As good as it was, our attention was quickly diverted for the dishes that followed:
duck confit spaghetti
chicken tenders
seafood sambal tumis
keropok lekor
soft-shelled chili crab
I can perhaps best describe many of these dishes as memorable. Tops was Delicious’ rendition of soft-shelled chili crab. Truth be told, I have never tried soft-shelled crab cooked in chili crab style. In fact, I wasn’t really a big fan of soft-shelled crab prior to the session. All it took was a little fusion of culinary styles for it to become my “focus” dish for the night. Like traditional chili crab, the dish came with soft buns that were just perfect for dipping into the chili sauce.
Another highlight for me was the Keropok Lekor. Its modest appearance didn’t draw me into the dish at first, but the first bite was a quick introduction to the unique and bursting fishy flavor of the “sausage.” It is definitely a must-try while in Delicious.
dessert selection at delicious!
After having tried the many dishes, it was now time for dessert. While I did get to try a good sampling of Delicious’ dessert offerings – and all of them were good – one that stands out is their coconut cake. As simple as this tropical treat may sound, the restaurant prepared it in a homely but tantalizing way, kinda like comfort food on steroids. The cake came ith fresh coconut filling on top, which really served to enhance the cake’s flavor and added a cooling effect on the overall dessert.
Delicious’ casual ambiance means that it’s a great place to consider for all sorts of occasions. The eclectic cuisines represented in the food offerings means that it’s also a safe place to bring friends and acquaintances, especially if one is not sure about their meal preferences. It suits families as well, where a kids menu is also available.
