Phase 2 is well underway and by this time, a good degree of normalcy has returned to Singapore’s dining scene, at least where customer traffic is concerned. More than ever, diners are seeking out for good deals especially as the country is plunged into its worst recession in history – with the F&B sector giving out some attractive deals to entice customers.
If like me, you have been craving for some outstanding Chinese cuisine after months of takeaways and deliveries, check out these offers that some of the country’s award-winning Chinese restaurants have in store.
Golden Peony
Golden Peony at Conrad Centennial Singapore launches mix and match set menus for both lunch (starting at S$48 per person) and dinner (starting at S$68 per person), breaking free from the usual rigid Chinese set meals. The Discovery lunch set contains 5 courses while the Discovery dinner set contains 6 – and for each course, diners get to have at least 3 options to choose from. The new menu throws in some of Golden Peony’s most iconic dishes – including their famous duck – as well as reinterpretations of old favorites. The 6-course dinner option is intuitively arranged with appetizer, soup, fish, meat, a carbohydrate dish and dessert.
golden peony – london duck pancake roll
When in Conrad Centennial Singapore, the ducks are a must-try so it’s only apt to go for the London Duck Pancake Roll which comes with Parma Ham, pineapple, crispy beancurd skin and chili crab meat swan pastry. Golden Peony uses Irish duck so the meat here contained a relatively higher fat content than most, rendering it as the “wagyu” when it comes to duck meat.
golden peony – steamed sea perch
The Steamed Sea Perch with Capsicum and Preserved Chili has an unmistakable Sichuan flare in preparation, with a slight “mala” feel to the tongue once you bite into the melt-in-your mouth sea perch. Among the new dishes at Golden Peony, this is probably my favorite one. The dishes at Golden Peony are not just a delight to the taste bud but most of them are also highly “instagrammable.” Case in point – the Stewed River Prawn, Crispy Egg Noodle Ball, Ginger, Spring Onion, Egg Gravy which is sure to generate conversation among those at the table.

Wan Hao
wan hao – stewed fuzzy melon
Wan Hao at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza is invoking a sense of nostalgia with its limited time authentic Cantonese classics with a la carte dishes starting from S$38++. Available until 31st October 2020, dishes include the Stewed Fuzzy Melon and Conpoy with Superior Stock (S$38++) which combines the sweetness of fuzzy melon with the natural umami essence of dried scallop. The superior stock is made with natural ingredients such as conpoy, old chicken, chicken feet and more, with no additives or preservatives.
wan hao – mandarin orange crispy deer ribs
Another interesting dish to try is the Mandarin Orange Crispy Deer Ribs (S$45++) with venison braised for 2.5 hours then fried to achieve a caramelized exterior. Mandarin orange peel is then used to season the meat. This dish pays homage to Hong Kong in the 1970s when game meat was in high demand due to the flourishing economy.
It also probably would not be a complete homage to Hong Kong cuisine if there is no duck. The Marinated Irish Duck with Sea Salt and Spice (S$38++) uses free-range duck meat that’s seasoned with sea salt and a secret traditional spice mix. Mind you, this is not the usual kind of duck. The Irish duck used here comes from the famed Silver Hill farm and have a relatively high fat content so you’re guaranteed of a juicy and tender bird.
