Ganko Sushi opened some 2 years back and remains to be one of the more popular dining establishments in the UBS building (9 Penang Road). It counts the likes of Sourbombe Bakery, Edith Patisserie and Pi Food as its neighbors.

ganko sushi
As the name suggests, Ganko is primarily known for their fresh sushi and sashimi. They serve it in various formats, from ala carte offerings to rice bowls, luxe lunch sets and omakase menus as well. Diners primarily come for their reasonably priced range of premium raw fish, although pricier and luxe omakase sets costing S$300++ are also available.
Ganko Sushi recently introduced new robatayaki offerings. The historic Japanese restaurant has diversified into a smokier new menu under the direction of a new head chef Koichi Matsuda, who took over the helm of the kitchen in recent months.
Borrowing from his experience in various Michelin-starred restaurants in Japan, Chef Koichi adds to Ganko’s premium offerings with a robatayaki menu that will change on rotation to reflect the best of the seasons.
Robatayaki charcoal-grilled goodness
large asparagus
hokkaido corn
shiitake mushrooms
potato with butter
Quality and simplicity define the robatayaki menu. The grill brings to life plant-based options like Shiitake Mushrooms ($5), Fushimi Shishitou Pepper ($5), Potato with Butter (S$5), Large Asparagus ($10) and Hokkaido Corn ($15). Many of these plant-based dishes don’t immediately sound as remarkable on paper when compared to their seafood counterparts but standouts like the Hokkaido Corn was especially sweet. I could not help but munch on quite a few pieces.
big clams
Some of the seafood offerings may generate some oohs and ahhs. Delectable options include Capelin Smelt ($15), Tiger Prawns ($15), Whole Squid ($15), Surf Clams ($15) and Big Clams ($20). Big Scallops from Hokkaido are also available at $30.
beef tongue
For those with a more adventurous palate, check out specialties such as Beef Tongue ($25) which has a perceptible bouncy texture.
Robatayaki Menu Launch Promotion
With the launch of the new robatayaki menu, Ganko Sushi is currently having a tempting 1-for-1 promotion* of equivalent value until 31 July 2023, where each table is limited to one redemption per bill. Their 1-for-1 promotion works in a more generous manner compared to most where you can get the equivalent value (even if it means multiple dishes) of what you order for rather than just getting 1 at a lower rate. For instance, if you order their Big Clams which costs S$20, you can order another S$20 even through an accumulative number of dishes (i.e. you can get the Hokkaido Corn and Shiitake Mushrooms, which cost S$15 and S$5 respectively, for free).
